Description
Cola nitida is an evergreen tropical tree that typically reaches heights of 12–20 m, though mature specimens can exceed 30 m. The trunk is straight with a cylindrical form, often bearing a smooth, pale gray bark that may develop shallow fissures with age. Leaves are simple, alternate, and palmately lobed with three to five lobes; they are glossy, dark green, and measure 10–20 cm in length.

The species produces small, yellowish-white, bell-shaped flowers arranged in axillary clusters. Each flower is hermaphroditic and exhibits the typical Malvaceae morphology, with five petals and a central column of fused stamens.

Fruit is a leathery, elliptical pod 6–10 cm long, containing one to three large seeds known as kola nuts. The seeds are roughly 2–3 cm in diameter, oval, and covered by a thin, fibrous testa. They contain caffeine, theobromine, and various polyphenols, which give them a characteristic bitter flavor and stimulant effect.

Native range and habitat
Cola nitida is indigenous to the humid, lowland forests of West and Central Africa, with documented native distribution in countries including Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The species thrives in well-drained, fertile soils and prefers a mean annual temperature of 24–28 °C and rainfall exceeding 1500 mm.

Cultivation and economic importance
The tree is cultivated both for its seeds and as an ornamental shade tree. Commercial plantations are established in West Africa and, to a lesser extent, in other tropical regions such as Brazil and Indonesia. Propagation is typically achieved by sowing fresh seeds, which exhibit high germination rates when sown promptly after extraction from the pod.

Kola nuts are harvested once the pods mature and split open naturally. After collection, the nuts are often sun‑dried, fermented, or roasted before being sold. Historically, the nuts have been a major source of caffeine and were a primary flavoring ingredient in early formulations of cola‑type soft drinks. Although modern commercial colas largely use synthetic caffeine and flavorings, natural kola nut extracts remain in niche markets and traditional beverages.

Cultural and medicinal uses
In many West African societies, kola nuts hold ceremonial significance, symbolizing hospitality, respect, and social bonds. They are presented during rituals, negotiations, and celebrations.

Medicinally, traditional practitioners have employed kola nuts for their stimulant properties to alleviate fatigue, aid digestion, and treat headaches. Pharmacological analyses confirm the presence of caffeine (approximately 2–3 % w/w) and theobromine, which contribute to central nervous system stimulation. However, systematic clinical studies on therapeutic efficacy are limited; therefore, claims beyond the recognized stimulant effect lack robust scientific validation.

Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not assessed Cola nitida as a separate species; it is generally considered of "Least Concern" due to its wide distribution and presence in cultivated settings. Nevertheless, habitat loss from deforestation and agricultural expansion can affect local wild populations.
