Coherence (film)

Coherence is a 2013 American independent science fiction psychological thriller film directed by James Ward Byrkit, in his directorial debut. It was written by Byrkit, based on a story by Byrkit and Alex Manugian. The film premiered at the Fantastic Fest in 2013 and was released theatrically in 2014. It is notable for its low budget, largely improvised dialogue, and intricate plot that explores themes of quantum mechanics, parallel realities, and identity.

Plot

The film centers on eight friends gathered for a dinner party at a house in northern California on the night a comet, dubbed "Miller's Comet," is passing unusually close to Earth. As the evening progresses, strange phenomena begin to occur: power outages, cell phone signals dropping, and an unsettling sense of disorientation. When they investigate a nearby house that appears to be the only one with power, they discover it is eerily identical to their own, leading them to believe that the comet's passage has created a rift in reality, causing multiple versions of their dinner party to exist simultaneously.

The group grapples with the terrifying implications of this phenomenon, as they encounter doppelgängers, objects that switch places, and messages from alternate selves. Trust among the friends quickly erodes as paranoia sets in, and they struggle to determine which version of reality, and which version of themselves, is the "original" or "correct" one. The narrative escalates into a complex and suspenseful examination of choices, consequences, and the breakdown of individual identity and collective sanity under extraordinary circumstances.

Production

Coherence was filmed over five nights in James Ward Byrkit's own house. The production budget was notably small, estimated at around $50,000. A key aspect of its unique production was the use of a minimal script, which primarily outlined plot points and character arcs, allowing the actors to largely improvise their dialogue. This approach contributed to the film's naturalistic feel and heightened the sense of authentic reactions to the bizarre events. The cast was often kept unaware of specific plot twists until they were revealed during filming, further enhancing their spontaneous responses.

Themes

The film delves into several complex themes, including:

  • Identity: The central question of what defines an individual when multiple versions of them exist, and how one's identity is shaped by their choices and memories.
  • Reality: Coherence challenges the audience's perception of a singular, stable reality, suggesting the existence of infinite possibilities and parallel universes.
  • Paranoia and Trust: As events unfold, the characters' trust in each other rapidly deteriorates, highlighting how fear and uncertainty can fracture relationships.
  • Quantum Mechanics: The film draws heavily on concepts from quantum physics, particularly Schrödinger's Cat thought experiment and the many-worlds interpretation, using them as a foundation for its fantastical premise.
  • Moral Ambiguity: Characters are forced to make desperate and ethically challenging decisions, exploring the extent to which people will go to preserve their perceived original reality or individual well-being.

Reception

Coherence received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its intelligent script, unique premise, and effective suspense despite its limited budget. Critics often highlighted its ability to generate profound philosophical questions about reality and self with minimal special effects. Review aggregators such as Rotten Tomatoes reported a high approval rating, commending the film for its originality, psychological depth, and the impressive performances of its ensemble cast, particularly given the improvisational nature of the production. It has gained a reputation as a clever and thought-provoking independent science fiction film.
