Physical Description
Coelopa frigida is a small to medium-sized dipteran, typically 5–9 mm in length. Adults possess a dark, glossy thorax and a relatively robust, brownish‑black abdomen. The wings are clear to faintly smoky with well‑developed venation. Sexual dimorphism is modest; males may exhibit slightly larger eyes and more pronounced foreleg bristles than females.

Distribution
The species has a circumpolar, temperate distribution, occurring along the coasts of North America (eastern and western seaboards), Europe (including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and the Baltic region), and parts of Asia (e.g., Japan, Russia's Far East). It is typically found in intertidal zones where decaying seaweed accumulates.

Habitat and Ecology
Coelopa frigida is closely associated with wrack beds—accumulations of seaweed such as kelp and carrageen—found on sandy or rocky beaches. The larvae develop within the moist, decomposing seaweed, feeding on microbial mats, decaying plant material, and associated microfauna. Adults are often observed walking on the surface of the wrack, where they may feed on surface‑dwelling microorganisms or nectar from beach flowers.

Life Cycle

  1. Egg – Females deposit eggs in moist seaweed substrates.
  2. Larva – Four larval instars occur over 2–4 weeks, depending on temperature and substrate quality. The larvae are vermiform, with a pair of anterior mouthparts adapted for scraping and ingesting microbial films.
  3. Pupa – Pupation takes place within the wrack, lasting from several days to a few weeks.
  4. Adult – Emergence coincides with favorable tidal and temperature conditions; adults live for a few weeks, primarily for reproduction.

Behavior

  • Mating – Males often establish territories on prominent pieces of seaweed and perform wing‑fanning displays to attract females.
  • Dispersal – Adults are capable of short flights but generally remain near the wrack zone; some individuals may be wind‑dispersed to new beaches.

Ecological Role
Coelopa frigida contributes to the decomposition of coastal organic matter, facilitating nutrient recycling within intertidal ecosystems. Its larvae are prey for a range of beach predators, including sandhoppers, beetles, and shorebirds.

Research Significance
The species has been used as a model organism in studies of:

  • Sexual selection – Notable for male “harassment” behavior and female resistance strategies.
  • Population genetics – High levels of genetic variation have been documented across its range, making it useful for examining gene flow in coastal habitats.
  • Ecotoxicology – Sensitivity to pollutants in seaweed beds has been investigated, providing insights into coastal contamination impacts.

Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Coelopa frigida; it is generally considered common and not under immediate threat. However, localized declines may occur where beach cleaning practices remove wrack habitats, reducing larval substrate availability.
