Cockshut Hill School

Cockshut Hill School is a mixed secondary school and sixth‑form academy located in the Yardley area of Birmingham, West Midlands, England (postcode B26 2HX). The institution serves pupils aged 11 to 16 and has an enrolment of approximately 1,068 students. It operates under the sponsorship of the Summit Learning Trust and is registered with the Department for Education under URN 142388.

The school occupies the site originally established as Cockshut Hill Council School in 1937, initially providing junior and infant education. Separate senior boys and girls departments opened during World War II (1941) and later became distinct schools before being merged into Cockshut Hill Secondary School. In the early 2000s the school obtained specialist status as a Technology College and was renamed Cockshut Hill Technology College. It converted to academy status in October 2016, adopting its current name.

Academically, Cockshut Hill School is an eight‑form entry comprehensive school that admits around 240 pupils each year. The curriculum follows national standards for Key Stages 3 and 4, leading to General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations. In 2019 the school's Progress 8 scores placed it among the most improved schools in the West Midlands.

Facilities on the single‑site campus include a new-build teaching block, traditional brick buildings housing subject‑specific departments, on‑site tennis courts, and a grass games area used for rugby in winter and athletics in summer. Additional sporting provisions are accessed through local off‑site venues such as Sedgmere Road playing fields and the nearby Sedgmere Club.

The school is inspected by Ofsted; its most recent inspection (June 2023) rated Cockshut Hill School as “Good”, with an “Outstanding” grade for personal development. The headteacher, Jody Clarke, leads a co‑educational staff team responsible for delivering the school's educational programme.

Notable former pupils include professional footballers Lee Carsley, Andy Gallinagh, Craig Gardner, Mat Sadler, Ben Turner and Andy Whing.
