Coburg High School
History
Coburg High School has a unique history, operating in two distinct phases.
Original Establishment (1916-1994): The school was originally established in 1916, serving the local community for over seven decades. Due to declining enrolments and a broader rationalisation of schools in Victoria during the 1990s, the school was closed in 1994. Its former site was subsequently used by other educational institutions.
Re-establishment (2015-Present): Following significant community advocacy and a growing demand for public secondary education in the area, the Victorian Government announced the re-establishment of Coburg High School. The school officially reopened its doors in 2015 on the original site, welcoming its first cohort of Year 7 students. It progressively expanded its year levels, eventually offering the full secondary curriculum up to Year 12. The re-established school features modern facilities alongside heritage-listed buildings.
Campus and Facilities
The campus is situated on the original site and has undergone substantial redevelopment. It combines updated and newly constructed facilities designed to support contemporary learning environments. These include:
Modern classrooms and learning spaces
Science laboratories
Technology and arts studios
A refurbished gymnasium and sports facilities
A library and resource centre
Outdoor recreational areas
Curriculum and Programs
Coburg High School offers a broad curriculum that adheres to the Victorian Curriculum F-10 and the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Key aspects of its educational approach include:
Academic Excellence: A focus on challenging students across all subject areas, promoting critical thinking and deep understanding.
Wellbeing: Comprehensive student wellbeing programs are integrated to support students' social, emotional, and mental health.
Diverse Pathways: The school prepares students for a range of post-secondary options, including university, TAFE, and employment, through tailored career guidance and subject selections.
Co-curricular Activities: A variety of co-curricular programs are offered, including sports, performing arts, debating, and student leadership opportunities, to foster holistic development.
Motto
The school's motto is "Sapere Aude," a Latin phrase meaning "Dare to be Wise." This motto reflects the school's commitment to encouraging intellectual curiosity, independent thought, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Community and Values
Coburg High School is deeply embedded within its local community, fostering strong relationships with families and local organisations. It champions values such as respect, integrity, resilience, and curiosity, aiming to develop responsible and engaged citizens.
