Overview
Clyde, Missouri, is an unincorporated community in Nodaway County, Missouri, United States. Located in the northwestern part of the state, Clyde is primarily known as the home of Conception Abbey, a prominent Roman Catholic Benedictine monastery and seminary. Despite its small size, the community holds significant religious and historical importance due to the abbey's presence.History
The community of Clyde developed around Conception Abbey, which was founded by Benedictine monks from Engelberg Abbey in Switzerland in 1873. The monks established the abbey to serve German Catholic immigrants in the region and to provide for the education of priests. A post office was established in the growing settlement in 1876, initially bearing the name Conception, after the newly founded abbey. In 1888, the townsite was formally platted. To prevent confusion with another existing community also named Conception within Missouri, the post office name—and subsequently the community's name—was changed to Clyde in the same year. The exact origin of the name "Clyde" is not definitively known but is widely believed to have been chosen to honor an early settler or local family, though some historical accounts suggest a possible connection to the River Clyde in Scotland.
