Clowance Wood

Clowance Wood is a fictional character in Winston Graham's historical novel series, Poldark. She is the second daughter of the central protagonists, Ross Poldark and Demelza Poldark.

Character Biography and Development: Born in 1782, Clowance grows up at Nampara, the Poldark estate in Cornwall. She is depicted as a vivacious, intelligent, and musically talented young woman, often inheriting her mother Demelza's spirited nature and her father Ross's thoughtful disposition. Her storylines are central to several of the later novels in the series, particularly those focusing on the younger generation of Poldarks.

Clowance's life is marked by significant romantic entanglements. Her first marriage is to Stephen Carrington, a handsome but ultimately flawed and deceitful ship's captain. This tumultuous relationship brings both joy and considerable heartbreak, exposing Clowance to harsh realities and challenging her ideals. After Stephen's tragic death, Clowance eventually finds love and remarries Francis Beauchamp, an upright and kind naval officer.

Throughout the series, Clowance navigates themes of social class, personal independence, and the expectations placed upon women in late 18th and early 19th-century society. She is often seen challenging conventions and pursuing her own desires, much like her parents before her. Her relationships with her siblings, particularly her older brother Jeremy and younger sister Isabella-Rose, also form an important part of her character development.
