Clos Saint-Denis

Clos Saint-Denis is a Grand Cru vineyard in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, France. The appellation produces red wine exclusively from the Pinot noir grape variety.

Location
The vineyard is situated within the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis, on the right bank of the Côte d’Or. It lies immediately adjacent to the village of Morey-Saint-Denis and is bounded on several sides by other classified vineyard parcels, including the Grand Crus of Clos de la Roche, Clos des Lambrays, and the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Millandes. The total surface area of the AOC is approximately 9 hectares.

Historical background
The name “Clos Saint-Denis” derives from the medieval Abbey of Saint‑Denis, which owned the walled (French: clos) vineyard from the 13th century onward. Following the French Revolution, the property was confiscated and subsequently divided among private owners. The vineyard’s Grand Cru status was formally recognized with the establishment of the AOC system in 1936.

Viticultural and œnological regulations
Under the Clos Saint‑Denis AOC regulations, only Pinot noir grapes may be cultivated. The appellation is subject to the standard Burgundy Grand Cru constraints, which include:

  • Maximum permitted yield of 35 hectolitres per hectare (subject to annual adjustments).
  • Minimum planting density of 9,000 vines per hectare.
  • Specified minimum potential alcohol level (generally around 10.5 % ABV for red Grand Cru wines).

These regulations are intended to preserve the typicity and quality associated with the Grand Cru designation.

Wine profile
Wines produced from Clos Saint‑Denis are characteristically deep‑colored, with pronounced acidity and firm tannic structure. Aromatic notes often include red and black berries, forest floor, and subtle spice. The wines are noted for their capacity to age, developing additional complexity over several decades.

Producers
Because the vineyard is fragmented among multiple owners, a range of producers—both négociants and domaine owners—market Clos Saint‑Denis wines. Notable domaines that own vineyard parcels include Domaine Ponsot, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (through lease arrangements), and Domaine Henri Gouges, among others.

Appellation status
Clos Saint‑Denis remains one of the classified Grand Cru appellations of Burgundy, contributing to the region’s reputation for high‑quality Pinot noir. Its wines are typically positioned at the upper end of the market in terms of both price and critical acclaim.
