Claudia's leaf warbler (Phylloscopus claudiae) is a species of leaf warbler in the family Phylloscopidae. It is a small, insectivorous passerine bird primarily found in East and Southeast Asia.

Taxonomy and Etymology

Claudia's leaf warbler was historically treated as a subspecies of Blyth's leaf warbler (Phylloscopus reguloides). However, based on morphological, vocal, and genetic differences, it is now widely recognized as a distinct species. The bird was named by the German ornithologist Ernst Hartert in honor of his wife, Claudia Hartert.

Physical Description

This species is characteristic of the Phylloscopus genus, being small with a slender bill. It typically features olive-green upperparts and pale whitish-yellow underparts. Distinctive features include a prominent pale supercilium (eyebrow stripe), dark eye stripes, and two pale bars on the wings. It is physically very similar to other members of the Phylloscopus reguloides complex, often requiring vocalization analysis or close hand-examination for definitive identification.

Distribution and Habitat

The breeding range of Claudia's leaf warbler is centered in central and eastern China. During the non-breeding season, it migrates to southern China and mainland Southeast Asia, including regions in Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar. Its preferred habitats include temperate deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Behavior and Ecology

The species is primarily insectivorous, foraging for small invertebrates among the foliage of trees. Like many leaf warblers, it is highly active and frequently moves through the canopy. Its song is a distinctive series of high-pitched whistles, which serves as a primary method for distinguishing it from closely related species in overlapping territories.

Conservation Status

Claudia's leaf warbler is currently assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a species of "Least Concern." This classification is based on its relatively large range and the absence of evidence suggesting a significant decline in population size.
