ClariS began as an independent duo named "ClariS" in 2009, consisting of two junior high school students, Clara and Aris. They initially gained attention by posting cover songs on the Japanese video-sharing website Nico Nico Douga. Following their growing popularity, they signed with Sony Music Entertainment Japan's label SME Records and made their major debut in October 2010 with the single "Connect," which served as the opening theme for the acclaimed anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica. From their major debut until 2017, ClariS maintained a policy of anonymity, with their faces never being publicly revealed. This decision was made to allow them to prioritize their studies while pursuing their musical careers. Their album covers and promotional materials often featured vibrant illustrations of the duo by various artists, contributing to their mysterious and unique image.
In June 2014, Aris announced her departure from the duo to focus on her studies and personal growth. Shortly after, in November 2014, a new member named Karen officially joined ClariS. The duo continued as Clara and Karen, releasing their first single together, "Clear Sky," in January 2015.
ClariS held their first live concert, "ClariS 1st Hall Concert ~Fumidasu Mirai e~," at the Nippon Budokan in February 2017. During this concert, they publicly revealed their faces for the first time to their audience.
