Clapton railway station was a former railway station located in the district of Clapton, in the London Borough of Hackney, England. The station was situated on the Great Eastern Railway (GER) line that connected Stratford to the north‑eastern suburbs of London.
History
The station was opened by the Great Eastern Railway on 7 August 1865 to serve the growing residential area of Clapton. It featured two platforms flanking the double‑track main line and was equipped with typical Victorian railway architecture, including a modest station building on the eastbound platform.
Operations
During its operational period, Clapton railway station was served by local passenger services running between Stratford and Stoke Newington, with some services extending to Cambridge and other destinations on the GER network. The station handled modest passenger volumes, reflecting the primarily residential character of the surrounding area.
Closure
Passenger services at Clapton railway station were withdrawn on 22 May 1915 as a wartime economy measure, and the station never reopened for regular passenger traffic. Freight operations continued to use the line, but the station infrastructure fell into disuse. The station was formally closed and the buildings were demolished in the early 1930s. The former site has since been redeveloped, and no physical remnants of the station remain.
