Definition
Clan Maxwell is a historic Lowland Scottish clan that originated in the region of Dumfriesshire. The clan is associated with the surname Maxwell and has been part of the Scottish nobility since the medieval period.
Overview
The Maxwell family emerged in the 12th century as landholders in the barony of Maxwell (also rendered as "Maccus' well") near the River Nith. Over subsequent centuries the Maxwells became prominent Scottish magnates, holding titles such as Lord Maxwell, Earl of Nithsdale, and later Marquess of (the title was created but later forfeited). Members of the clan played significant roles in the Wars of Scottish Independence, the Anglo‑Scottish border conflicts, and the Jacobite uprisings of the 18th century.
The principal seat of the clan was historically Maxwell Castle (also known as Caerlaverock) and later estates such as Traquair House in the Scottish Borders and Monreith House in Wigtownshire. After the forfeiture of the earldom of Nithsdale in 1716, the main line of the clan continued through junior branches, notably the Maxwells of Monreith, who are presently recognised by the Court of the Lord Lyon as the chief of the name.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Maxwell” is derived from the Old English or early Scots elements Maccus (a personal name of Norse origin) and well (meaning “spring” or “stream”), thus signifying “Maccus’s spring.” The clan’s early territorial designation reflects this toponymic origin.
