Claire Fuller

Claire Fuller (born 1967) is a British novelist and short story writer. She is known for her literary fiction, often characterized by its atmospheric settings, psychological depth, and explorations of family secrets, trauma, and isolation. Her works have received critical acclaim and numerous awards.

Early Life and Career Fuller was born in Oxfordshire, England. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked in various roles, including as a marketing and PR professional. She began writing fiction later in life, attending creative writing courses and workshops.

Literary Career Fuller's debut novel, Our Endless Numbered Days, was published in 2015 and won the Desmond Elliott Prize. The novel tells the story of Peggy Hillcoat, who is taken by her survivalist father to live in a remote cabin.

Her second novel, Swimming Lessons (2017), was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Encore Award. It explores the disappearance of a woman and the letters she left behind, hidden in books for her husband to find.

Bitter Orange (2018), her third novel, is a gothic tale of two women researching a folly in a crumbling English country house during the summer of 1969. It was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction.

Her fourth novel, Unsettled Ground (2021), won the Costa Book of the Year award, marking her most significant literary achievement to date. The novel follows 51-year-old twins Jeanie and Julius, who live an isolated, off-grid existence, until their mother's death unravels their fragile world. It was also longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction.

Fuller's fifth novel, The Memory of Animals, was published in 2023. Set during a global pandemic, it follows a woman volunteering for a medical trial who finds herself drawn into the lives of her fellow participants.

Beyond her novels, Fuller has also published short stories in various literary magazines and anthologies.
