Ciro Redondo is a municipality located in the central part of Cuba, within the province of Ciego de Ávila. The town serves as the municipal seat and is situated approximately midway between the provincial capitals of Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey.
Etymology
The municipality is named after Ciro Redondo (1919 – 1960), a Cuban revolutionary who participated in the guerrilla activities of the 1950s and was killed during the revolutionary struggle against the Batista regime.
Geography
- Location: Central Cuba, eastern sector of Ciego de Ávila Province.
- Area: Approximately 582 km² (224 sq mi).
- Topography: The terrain is predominantly flat to gently rolling, part of the Cuban central plateau.
- Climate: Tropical savanna (Aw) with a distinct dry season (November–April) and a wet season (May–October). Average annual temperature is around 24 °C (75 °F).
History
The settlement that later became Ciro Redondo originated as a small agricultural community in the early 20th century, primarily based on sugarcane cultivation. In 1976, during a nationwide administrative reorganization, the municipality was formally created and named in honor of the revolutionary figure Ciro Redondo.
Demographics
According to the Cuban National Office of Statistics (Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas e Información) data from the early 2000s, the municipality had a population of roughly 33,000 inhabitants, yielding a population density of about 57 inhabitants per km². More recent official census figures have not been publicly released.
Economy
The local economy is anchored in agriculture, with the following sectors being most prominent:
- Sugarcane: Large plantations and associated processing facilities continue to dominate production.
- Livestock: Cattle raising and dairy farming are significant in the peripheral areas.
- Miscellaneous crops: Limited cultivation of corn, beans, and tropical fruits complements the primary agricultural base.
Small‑scale manufacturing and services related to municipal administration, education, and health care also contribute to employment.
Administrative Divisions
Ciro Redondo municipality is subdivided into several “consejos populares” (people’s councils), which function as local administrative units. Notable consejos include the central town of Ciro Redondo, as well as rural communities such as Primero de Enero, El Corral, and La Pista.
Infrastructure
- Transportation: The municipality is connected to the national road network via the Carretera Central (Central Highway), which passes near the town. A regional railway line, part of Cuba’s national rail system, traverses the municipality, providing freight service primarily for agricultural products.
- Education and Health: The town hosts primary and secondary schools, a technical institute focused on agricultural studies, and a general hospital supplemented by several rural health clinics.
Cultural and Social Aspects
Local cultural activities often center on traditional Cuban music, dance, and festivals that coincide with national holidays and agricultural seasons. The municipality observes the anniversary of Ciro Redondo’s death (November 23) with commemorative events.
