English Channel Records

Nicholas achieved her most famous feat on July 29-30, 1977, when she became the first woman to complete a two-way (double) crossing of the English Channel. This grueling endeavor required her to swim from Dover, England, to Cap Gris Nez, France, and back again, taking her 19 hours and 55 minutes. This accomplishment was a major milestone in marathon swimming, demonstrating extraordinary endurance and mental toughness.

Throughout her career, Nicholas completed multiple successful English Channel crossings, showcasing remarkable consistency and resilience. Her achievements not only set new records but also inspired a generation of open-water swimmers and pushed the boundaries of what was considered possible for female athletes in the sport.

Later Career and Recognition

After retiring from competitive swimming, Cindy Nicholas pursued a career in law, becoming a practicing lawyer. She also ventured into politics, serving as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for the riding of Scarborough Centre from 1987 to 1990, representing the Ontario Liberal Party.

Her profound contributions to sport have been widely recognized. Nicholas was inducted into the [[Canadian Sports Hall of Fame]] in 1980 and the [[International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame]] in 1981, cementing her legacy as one of the greatest marathon swimmers of her era.
