Chururu

Definition
Chururu is a mountain in the Andes of Peru, reaching an elevation of approximately 5,010 m (16,440 ft). Its name derives from a local term for certain high‑altitude flamingo species (Phoenicoparrus jamesi and, occasionally, Phoenicoparrus andinus).

Overview
Chururu lies within the Lima Region, specifically in the Huaura Province’s Santa Leonor District. The peak is situated near the Yanama River, southwest of the mountain Chururuyuq and west of the lake Muruqucha. As part of the central Andes, the mountain is characterized by puna grassland, glacial remnants, and typical high‑mountain geology. Its remote location makes it a lesser‑known but notable feature among the “five‑thousanders” of the Peruvian Andes.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Chururu” is a vernacular word used by local Andean communities to refer to the Andean flamingos—particularly the James’s flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) and, in some contexts, the Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus). The term has also been spelled “Chururo.” The mountain’s naming reflects the cultural practice of assigning geographic features names based on prominent wildlife or local linguistic traditions.
