Churchtown is an unincorporated community and census‑designated place (CDP) located in East Coventry Township, Chester County, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. Situated in the southeastern part of the state, it lies near the intersection of Pennsylvania Route 23 and Churchtown Road, approximately 50 mi west of Philadelphia.
Geography
The CDP encompasses an area of about 0.56 square miles (1.45 km²), all of which is land. The community is part of the Brandywine Creek watershed, with the creek flowing several miles to the southeast.
Demographics
According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Churchtown was 362 at the 2010 census. The 2020 census recorded a modest increase, bringing the total to 398 residents. The population density is roughly 710 persons per square mile (274 persons per km²). The racial composition is predominantly White, with small percentages of African American, Asian, and Hispanic or Latino residents.
History
Churchtown developed in the early 19th century as a rural crossroads community along the historic Philadelphia and Baltimore Turnpike (now Pennsylvania Route 23). The community’s name derives from the presence of a prominent Methodist Episcopal church that served as a focal point for residents.
The Churchtown Historic District, which includes a collection of 19th‑century residential, commercial, and religious structures, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Notable contributing properties include the Churchtown United Methodist Church (built 1850) and several well‑preserved vernacular stone houses.
Economy and Land Use
The local economy is primarily residential and agricultural, with surrounding farmland engaged in dairy, corn, and soybean production. Small businesses in the community consist of a convenience store, a post office (ZIP 19320), and a few service-oriented establishments.
Education
Churchtown is served by the Owen J. Roberts School District. Children attend Owen J. Roberts Elementary School, Middle School, and High School, all located in nearby townships.
Transportation
Pennsylvania Route 23 provides east‑west access, connecting Churchtown to the borough of Coatesville to the east and the town of West Chester to the west. The nearest major highway is Interstate 95, accessible via Route 23 and U.S. Route 30. No rail service directly serves the community; the nearest passenger rail station is in Lancaster.
