Early life and education
Darling was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa, where he played collegiate basketball for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1949 to 1952. As a forward/center, he earned All‑Big Ten honors and helped lead the Hawkeyes to a Big Ten championship in the 1951–52 season.

The United States team finished the competition with an undefeated record and captured the gold medal.

After the Olympics, Darling continued to play in the AAU circuit before retiring from competitive basketball in the late 1950s. He subsequently pursued a career in business, working primarily in the manufacturing sector in Iowa. Darling has remained involved in his local community, participating in alumni events for the University of Iowa and supporting youth basketball programs.

Legacy
Darling is recognized as part of the generation of American players who helped maintain the United States’ dominance in international basketball during the early post‑World War II period. His Olympic gold medal places him among the select group of athletes who have achieved the highest honor in the sport on behalf of the United States.
