Charles J. Banker (born c. 1939 or 1940, Monrovia, California) is an American former football coach and executive. He served as head football coach for Westminster College (now Westminster University) in 1970, Viewmont High School from 1974 to 1975, and Iowa State University in an interim capacity in 1986. He also coached at the collegiate level for Glendale (CA), Utah, and Boise State, and in the National Football League (NFL) for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Redskins.
Playing Career
Banker played college football as a tight end and linebacker for Glendale College (1957–1958) and Cal State Los Angeles (1959–1961).
Coaching Career
College Coaching
Banker began his coaching career in 1962 as a defensive line coach at Glendale (CA). He subsequently served as linebackers/defensive ends coach at Utah (1966–1967) and defensive coordinator at Westminster (UT) (1968–1969). He became head coach at Westminster in 1970, posting a 4–6 record. After a stint as offensive line coach at Utah (1971–1973) and head coach at Viewmont High School (1974–1975), he moved to Boise State as linebackers coach (1976–1978) and later defensive coordinator (1979).
In 1986, Banker joined Iowa State as assistant head coach and defensive ends coach. When head coach Jim Criner was dismissed with two games remaining in the season, Banker served as interim head coach, leading the Cyclones to a 1–1 record.
NFL Coaching
Banker entered the NFL in 1980 as special teams coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, a role he held through 1984. He also served as defensive assistant (1983–1984) and offensive backs coach (1985) for the Cardinals. He joined the Washington Redskins as special teams coach from 1987 to 1988.
Administrative Career
After his on-field coaching career, Banker transitioned into scouting and personnel roles. He worked as a scout for the Washington Redskins (1989–1993), director of player personnel for the Philadelphia Eagles (1994–1995), director of scouting for the Eagles (1996), and director of player personnel for the Redskins (1997–1999). He finished his career as director of pro scouting for the expansion Houston Texans from 2000 to 2003.
Head Coaching Record
Banker's overall college head coaching record was 5–7: 4–6 at Westminster (1970) and 1–1 as interim at Iowa State (1986).
