Christopher McQuarrie (born October 7, 1968) is an American screenwriter, film director, and producer. He is best known for his work on the crime thriller The Usual Suspects (1995), for which he received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and for directing several entries in the Mission: Impossible franchise, including Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018).
Early life and education
McQuarrine was born in New York City. He attended the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in film production.
Career
Screenwriting
McQuarrie's breakthrough came with the 1995 crime thriller The Usual Suspects, co‑written with Bryan Gould. The screenplay earned the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, a Writers Guild of America award, and a BAFTA nomination. He subsequently wrote the 2000 western‑action film The Way of the Gun and the 2008 action thriller Wanted (uncredited rewrite). Beginning in 2011, McQuarrie became a frequent collaborator with Tom Cruise, scripting Jack Reacher (2012), Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018). He also co‑wrote the screenplay for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) and the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023).
Directing
McQuarrie made his directorial debut with The Way of the Gun (2000), which he also wrote. He directed the 2012 action film Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise. In 2018, he both wrote and directed Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which received critical acclaim and strong box‑office performance. He served as director and co‑producer on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023).
