Born on 4 October 1940, Christopher Church was a British cyclist, businessman, and pioneer of human-powered flight. After the death of his biological father, James Brindley Nicolson—a Royal Air Force pilot awarded the Victoria Cross during the Battle of Britain—in 1945, Church was adopted by Fred and Elsie Church, taking their surname.
Church competed in the men's sprint and men's tandem events at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He was also a multiple-time British track champion and served as a reserve for Great Britain at the 1960 Summer Olympics. In 1963, he became one of the first people to achieve human-powered flight.
Professionally, Church worked as an aeronautical engineer (a draughtsman) at the Hawker Siddeley aircraft factory and was involved as a test pilot in the HMPAC Puffin human-powered aircraft programme. According to his son, Church was the first to fly the Puffin in preliminary trials but was injured when it crashed.
In 1970, Church moved to the United States to work for the American arm of Spode, eventually rising to become the company's CEO. He also served as a vice president of Gucci. He died on 1 May 2001 in Malibu, California, at age 60.
