Christian Redl (born 20 April 1948) is a German actor, narrator, and singer.
Life and Career
Christian Redl was born in Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein, and grew up in Kassel. He trained at the Schauspielschule Bochum from 1967 to 1970 and subsequently performed at theatres in Wuppertal, Frankfurt, Bremen, and Hamburg, working with directors Claus Peymann, Luc Bondy, and Peter Zadek.
His first major cinema role came in 1986 in Uwe Schrader's Sierra Leone. He gained wider recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s for films directed by Bernd Schadewald, most notably his lead role in the 1990 television film Der Hammermörder, for which he received the Grimme-Preis. He was also nominated for a Telestar award for the 1994 film Angst.
Redl has appeared in numerous television productions, including collaborations with director Matti Geschonneck on Der Rosenmörder, Ein mörderischer Plan, and Späte Rache. He portrayed Generaloberst Alfred Jodl in Oliver Hirschbiegel's 2004 film Downfall (Der Untergang). He also played roles in the films Tattoo (2002), Krabat (2008), and Die Päpstin (2009). Since 2006, he has starred as Commissioner Thorsten Krüger in the ZDF crime series Spreewaldkrimi. In 2013, he won the German Academy of Television award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Marie Brand und die offene Rechnung.
In addition to acting, Redl works as an audiobook narrator and musician, having released several albums including Das wilde Herz (2005), Sehnsucht (2014), and Louise (2016).
Personal Life
Redl was in a long-term relationship with actress Maja Maranow. He is the stepbrother of actor Wolf Redl (1939–2010).
Note: There is also a separate individual named Christian Redl who is an Austrian extreme sports athlete and freediver, holding multiple world records in freediving under ice and in caves. This is a different person from the actor.
