Christian Ponder (born February 25, 1988) is an American former professional football quarterback. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Minnesota Vikings (2011–2013) and the Denver Broncos (2014). Prior to his NFL career, Ponder was a standout quarterback for the Florida State Seminoles.
Early life and education
Christian John Ponder was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the Dallas suburb of Plano. He attended Plano West Senior High School, where he played high school football and was rated as a three‑star recruit. Ponder received scholarship offers from several Division I programs and ultimately committed to Florida State University.
College career
Ponder redshirted his first season (2006) at Florida State. He became the starting quarterback during the 2008 season, leading the Seminoles to a 9‑3 record and a win in the 2009 Orange Bowl. Over his collegiate career (2006–2010), Ponder amassed 7,866 passing yards, 58 touchdown passes, and 30 interceptions. He earned All‑ACC honorable‑mention honors in 2009 and 2010. Ponder concluded his college tenure as the school's second‑all‑time passer in yards and touchdowns.
NFL career
Minnesota Vikings (2011–2013)
Ponder was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round (12th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. He signed a four‑year contract worth $15 million. In his rookie season, Ponder started 13 games, completing 211 of 382 passes for 2,424 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, and led the Vikings to an 8‑8 record. He returned as the primary starter in 2012, posting a 4,019‑yard, 22‑touchdown, 12‑interception season; however, the team finished 10‑6 and missed the playoffs. In 2013, after a 5‑6 start and competition from rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, Ponder was benched and subsequently released in March 2014.
Denver Broncos (2014)
Ponder signed a one‑year contract with the Denver Broncos in March 2014, serving as a backup to Peyton Manning. He appeared in limited action during the regular season, completing 2 of 4 passes for 12 yards. The Broncos reached Super Bowl XLVIII, where they were defeated by the Seattle Seahawks; Ponder did not play in the game.
Ponder announced his retirement from professional football in 2016.
Post‑playing career
Following retirement, Ponder became a sports analyst and commentator. He has contributed to various media outlets, including radio and television appearances discussing NFL topics. In addition, Ponder has been involved in charitable activities, supporting organizations such as the Special Olympics and local youth sports programs.
Personal life
