Christabel Burniston

Christabel Burniston (1909–2006) was a British educator, author, and pioneer in the field of oral communication and spoken English. She is best known as the founder of the English Speaking Board (ESB), an international awarding body established to promote and assess communication skills.

Burniston began her career in speech and drama, developing a philosophy that emphasized the importance of oral expression as a fundamental life skill, equal in importance to reading and writing. In 1953, she founded the English Speaking Board in Southport, England. Her objective was to shift the focus of speech education away from elocution and "received pronunciation" toward clarity, confidence, and the effective transmission of ideas regardless of regional accent.

Throughout her career, Burniston authored numerous influential texts and manuals regarding speech education, including Creative Oral Assessment and Speech in Practice. Her work focused on practical examinations that assessed a candidate's ability to engage in conversation, read aloud, and give presentations.

In recognition of her contributions to education and the arts, Burniston was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1998. The English Speaking Board continues to operate internationally, providing certifications in speech, language, and communication based on the principles she established.
