Chisi Island

Chisi Island is a small island located in the Mozambican waters of [[Lake Malawi]], also known as Lake Nyasa or Lago Niassa. It is situated within the [[Niassa Province]] of [[Mozambique]].

Geography

Chisi Island is one of numerous islands found within Lake Malawi, which is one of the [[African Great Lakes]] and ranks as the third-largest and second-deepest lake in Africa. The island itself is relatively small, often described as having a rocky landscape, a common characteristic of many islands in the lake. Its geographical position places it within the northern portion of Mozambique's share of the lake, situated off the eastern shore.

Ecology and Environment

As an integral part of the Lake Malawi ecosystem, Chisi Island is surrounded by significant [[biodiversity]]. The lake is particularly renowned for its exceptional diversity of [[cichlid]] fish species, many of which are [[endemism|endemic]] to its waters. The aquatic environment surrounding Chisi Island contributes to the lake's substantial ecological importance, which is globally recognized, and the lake is sometimes referred to as a [[UNESCO World Heritage Site]] (referring to the Lake Malawi National Park on the Malawian side, but representing the broader ecosystem). While the island itself may not host extensive unique flora or fauna, it is an integral component of this vast and biologically rich freshwater environment.

Human Activity

Given its remote location and modest size, direct permanent human settlement or extensive activity on Chisi Island is typically limited. However, the surrounding waters are crucial for local [[fishing industry|fishing communities]] in Mozambique, who depend on the lake's abundant resources for subsistence and livelihood. The island may serve as a navigational landmark or provide temporary shelter for local fishermen. Access to Chisi Island is predominantly by boat.
