China Railways JF6

Definition
The China Railways JF6 (解放 6, Jiefang 6) is a class of standard‑gauge, 2‑8‑2 “Mikado” steam locomotives that were operated by the People's Republic of China for main‑line freight service.

Overview
The JF6 class entered service in the late 1930s and early 1940s, originally built for various Chinese railway operators and, in some cases, for the South Manchuria Railway (Mantetsu). After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the locomotives were incorporated into the national railway fleet and, in 1951, were re‑classified under the “Jiefang” (Liberation) series as JF6. The class remained in regular operation on heavy freight routes throughout the 1950s–1970s and was gradually withdrawn from service during the 1980s and early 1990s as diesel and electric traction replaced steam.

Etymology / Origin

  • JF: An abbreviation of the Chinese term 解放 (Jǐefàng), meaning “Liberation.” The designation was introduced in 1951 for a family of freight‑type steam locomotives.
  • 6: The numerical suffix distinguishes this subclass from other JF classes (e.g., JF1, JF2, etc.).

Manufacturer Units were produced by several foreign builders, including the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and the Baldwin Locomotive Works, as well as by the Chinese railway workshops (e.g., Dalian Locomotive Works) under license.
Service role Primarily freight haulage on main‑line routes; occasional passenger duties during periods of equipment shortage.
Preservation A small number of JF6 locomotives have been preserved in railway museums and static displays in China; most were scrapped after withdrawal.

Note: Precise technical specifications vary among individual locomotives because the class was assembled from a mixture of imported and domestically‑built components. Accurate information is not confirmed for every datum.
