China Bay Airport (IATA: TRR, ICAO: VCCC) is a mixed‑use civil and military aerodrome located in the suburb of China Bay, approximately 6 km northeast of the city of Trincomalee in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. The facility is operated jointly by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) as SLAF China Bay and by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka for commercial airline services.
Location and facilities
The airport sits at an elevation of about 12 m (39 ft) above mean sea level. It has a single asphalt runway designated 05/23, which is 3,040 m (9,973 ft) long and 45 m wide, capable of handling medium‑size jet aircraft. Passenger terminal facilities are modest, providing basic check‑in, baggage handling, and waiting areas for domestic and limited international flights. Ground support includes aircraft‑maintenance units operated by the SLAF and a separate civil‑aviation apron.
History
The airfield was constructed by the British colonial administration during World War II and commissioned as Royal Air Force (RAF) China Bay in 1943. It served as a strategic base for Allied operations in the Indian Ocean, accommodating bomber and fighter squadrons. After Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) attained independence in 1948, the installation was transferred to the Royal Ceylon Air Force (RCyAF) and renamed RCyAF China Bay. Following the establishment of the Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972, the base became part of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and was redesignated SLAF China Bay.
Operations
China Bay Airport functions as both a military air base and a civil airport. The SLAF uses the facility for training, logistical support, and coastal‑defence operations. Civilian air services are limited primarily to domestic routes; historically, SriLankan Airlines has operated scheduled flights linking Trincomalee with Colombo and other regional destinations. The airport also handles occasional charter, humanitarian, and disaster‑relief flights, especially in response to natural emergencies affecting the eastern region of the country.
Airlines and destinations
As of the latest publicly available schedule, the only regular commercial service is a domestic flight operated by SriLankan Airlines between Trincomalee (TRR) and Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo. Service frequency and destinations are subject to change based on airline operational decisions and market demand.
