Description
Chicoreus loebbeckei is a large marine gastropod whose shell can reach lengths of 150–200 mm. The shell is characteristically robust with three prominent axial varices bearing elongated, recurved spines. The surface is sculptured with fine spiral cords intersected by axial ribs, giving a reticulate texture. Coloration is typically a cream‑to‑white base overlaid with brown or reddish‑brown blotches and spiral stripes; the spines often appear darker than the background. The aperture is ovate, edged with a thin, toothed outer lip, and the siphonal canal is long and straight.
Distribution and habitat
- Geographic range: Indo‑Pacific region, recorded from the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the northern coast of Australia. Some reports also include coastal waters of southern Japan.
- Habitat: Subtidal coral reef and rocky substrates, typically residing at depths of 5–30 m. The species favors sheltered lagoonal environments where it can locate its prey.
Ecology
Chicoreus loebbeckei is a carnivorous predator, like other muricids. It uses a radula and acidic secretions to drill through the shells of bivalves and other mollusks, as well as to capture small crustaceans. Observations indicate nocturnal foraging activity, with individuals often concealed within crevices during daylight hours.
Reproduction
The species is gonochoristic (separate sexes). Females lay egg capsules that are attached to hard substrates; each capsule contains dozens of embryos that develop into planktonic veliger larvae before settling.
Human use and conservation
The attractive, spiny shells are collected for the ornamental trade and occasionally appear in marine aquarium displays. There is currently no formal assessment of the species on the IUCN Red List; however, localized collecting pressure may affect populations in heavily harvested locales.
