History
Chicago Fire FC was awarded an MLS expansion franchise on March 11, 1997, and began play in the 1998 season. The team was named after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The club's inaugural season was highly successful; it won the MLS Cup, the Supporters' Shield, and the U.S. Open Cup, achieving a domestic treble.
