Chelsea Brown (December 6, 1947 – April 13, 2017) was an American actress, comedian, and dancer, best known as an original cast member of the groundbreaking sketch comedy television series Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (1968–1969). Her career spanned several decades, encompassing roles in American film and television, as well as a significant period working in Australian productions.
Early Life and Career Born in Chicago, Illinois, Brown began her career in entertainment as a dancer and performer. She appeared in the film A Man Called Adam (1966) and had guest roles in various television series before achieving widespread recognition.
Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In Brown gained significant fame as a regular on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, which debuted in 1968. As one of the few African American performers on the show's original cast, she contributed to its diverse ensemble and its rapid-fire comedic style. Her segments often featured quick jokes, spirited dance routines, and her distinctive laugh, making her a memorable presence during the show's initial highly successful run.
Post-Laugh-In Career After leaving Laugh-In in 1969, Brown continued to work extensively in television and film. She made guest appearances on numerous popular TV shows, including Marcus Welby, M.D., Love, American Style, The New Bill Cosby Show, The Streets of San Francisco, Police Story, Hotel, and L.A. Law. Her film credits include The Great White Hope (1970) and The Baby Maker (1970). She also performed in stage productions.
Move to Australia In the 1980s, Brown relocated to Australia, where she continued her acting career. She appeared in Australian television series such as Number 96 and Special Squad. While residing in Australia, she married Australian actor and performer Vic Rooney.
Later Life and Death Brown eventually returned to the United States. She continued to take on occasional roles, including a guest appearance on The Tracey Morgan Show. Chelsea Brown passed away on April 13, 2017, in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the age of 69, due to complications from an illness.
