Chatkhil Upazila

Definition
Chatkhil Upazila is an administrative sub-district (upazila) of Noakhali District in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh.

Overview
Located in the southeastern part of the country, Chatkhil Upazila covers an area of approximately 215 km². According to the 2011 Bangladesh census, the upazila had a total population of about 274,000 people, with a density of roughly 1,274 inhabitants per square kilometre. The region is primarily rural, with agriculture serving as the main livelihood for the majority of residents. The upazila is subdivided into ten union parishads, which are further divided into mauzas and villages.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Chatkhil” is derived from local Bengali terminology; however, precise historical documentation of the term’s origin is limited. It is generally understood to be a toponym reflecting the area’s geographical or cultural characteristics, but definitive etymological evidence is not confirmed.

Characteristics

  • Geography: Chatkhil lies on the floodplain of the Meghna River system, resulting in fertile alluvial soils suitable for rice cultivation and other crops. The area experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with heavy rainfall during the monsoon season (June–October) and a pronounced dry period in winter.

  • Administration: The upazila is administered by an Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and an elected Upazila Parishad (council). Its ten union parishads are: Chatkhil, Gopalpur, Kanchanpur, Kazir Char, Khamarkhola, Maijdi, Maheshkhali, Nandigram, Shikarpur, and Subidpur.

  • Economy: Agriculture dominates the local economy, with rice, jute, and vegetable production being prominent. Small-scale fisheries and aquaculture also contribute to livelihoods, leveraging the region’s water resources. Limited industrial activity includes rice mills and small agro‑processing units.

  • Education: The upazila hosts a network of primary and secondary schools, several madrassas, and at least one government college—Chatkhil Government College—providing higher secondary education. Literacy rates have been improving but remain below the national average.

  • Infrastructure: Road connectivity consists mainly of paved and mud roads linking villages to the upazila headquarters in Chatkhil town. Public transport includes bus and van services to nearby districts such as Noakhali and Feni. Health facilities comprise a Upazila Health Complex, union health and family welfare centres, and private clinics.

  • Culture and Society: The population is predominantly Bengali-speaking Muslims, with minority Hindu communities. Traditional festivals such as Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, and the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh) are widely observed. Folk music and rural sports, including kabaddi, are part of local cultural practices.
