Charles Wooler

Charles Robert Dudley Wooler (30 June 1930 – 26 April 2017) was a first‑class cricketer who played as a right‑arm fast‑medium bowler for Leicestershire County Cricket Club in England and for the Rhodesia cricket team in the Currie Cup competition.

Wooler was born in Bulawayo, then part of Southern Rhodesia (present‑day Zimbabwe). Details of his early education and family background are not extensively documented in major cricket references.

He became a regular member of the side for the 1950 County Championship, taking 54 wickets at an average of 31.31. The following season he improved his haul to 50 wickets at 28.20. His best innings figures for Leicestershire were 5 / 47.

  • Rhodesia – After the 1950 English season, Wooler moved to Rhodesia, where he represented the provincial side in the 1951/52 Currie Cup. Over his Rhodesian tenure he claimed 23 wickets at 32.34, including the notable dismissal of England’s celebrated batsman Denis Compton while playing for the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1956/57.

Across his first‑class career, Wooler played 60 matches, scored 832 runs at a batting average of 10.80, and took 130 wickets at an average of 31.00. He recorded three five‑wicket hauls but never achieved ten wickets in a match.

Later life and death
