Charles Poindexter (born May 31 1949) is an American politician and businessman who served as a Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2002 to 2020, representing the 9th district, which includes parts of Botetourt, Craig, Giles, and Montgomery counties, as well as the city of Radford.
Early life and education
Poindexter was born in Roanoke, Virginia. He attended Virginia Tech, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration.
Business career
Before entering politics, Poindexter owned and operated Poindexter Enterprises, a construction and contracting firm based in Virginia. He was active in local business associations and chambers of commerce.
Political career
In 2001, Poindexter was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, succeeding fellow Republican Bill A. Waddell. He was re‑elected for nine consecutive terms, serving on several key committees, including Appropriations, Finance, and Agriculture, Chesapeake, and Natural Resources. During his tenure, he was noted for his focus on fiscal conservatism, rural infrastructure, and education policy.
Poindexter announced his retirement from the House of Delegates in early 2020 and did not seek re‑election. He was succeeded by Republican Wren Williams following the 2021 election.
Personal life
Poindexter resides in Pearisburg, Virginia, with his wife, Linda. He is affiliated with the Baptist faith and participates in community service projects within his district.
