Charles K. Wiggins

Charles K. Wiggins is an American jurist who served as a justice of the Washington State Supreme Court from 2010 to 2020, including a term as chief justice from 2019 to 2020.

Overview
Born in 1953 in Seattle, Washington, Wiggins earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington in 1975 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Washington School of Law in 1978. After completing his legal education, he entered private practice and later served as a deputy prosecuting attorney in King County. In 1995, he was appointed to the Washington Court of Appeals, Division I, where he served until his elevation to the state supreme court.

Governor Christine Gregoire appointed Wiggins to the Washington Supreme Court in November 2010 to fill a vacancy left by Justice James M. Johnson. He was subsequently retained by voters in the 2011 general election. While on the bench, Justice Wiggins authored opinions on a range of issues, including criminal procedure, civil rights, and environmental regulation. His tenure as chief justice, beginning in January 2019, was marked by efforts to improve court accessibility and to modernize court administration.

Wiggins announced his retirement from the Supreme Court in September 2020, and he was succeeded by Justice Steven C. González.
