Charles Ezra Clarke (November 28, 1822 – May 1, 1889) was an American politician and lawyer who served one term as a U.S. Representative from New York from 1853 to 1855.
Biography
Clarke was born in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York, on November 28, 1822. He attended the common schools and later studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced practice in Auburn.
Political Career
From 1850 to 1853, Clarke served as the district attorney of Cayuga County. In 1852, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress, representing New York's 25th congressional district. He served one term, from March 4, 1853, to March 3, 1855. He did not seek re-election in 1854.
Later Life and Death
Following his congressional service, Clarke resumed the practice of law. He later moved to New York City, where he continued his legal career. He was also appointed as a commissioner of the New York State Capitol in Albany.
Clarke died in New York City on May 1, 1889, at the age of 66. He was interred in Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York.
