Charles B. Landis (June 11, 1847 – May 23, 1925) was an American lawyer and Republican politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Indiana.
Early life and education
Born in Muncie, Indiana, Landis attended local public schools before studying law. He was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1869 and began practicing in Muncie.
Political career
Landis was elected to the Indiana State Senate, serving from 1887 to 1889. In 1894, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Indiana’s 11th congressional district. He served six consecutive terms from March 4, 1895, to March 3, 1907. During his tenure, he was a member of several committees, including the Committee on Public Lands and the Committee on the Judiciary. He did not seek renomination in 1906.
Later life
After leaving Congress, Landis returned to his law practice in Muncie. He remained active in local affairs and was involved with the Republican Party at the state level. He died in Muncie on May 23, 1925, and was interred in the city's Oak Hill Cemetery.
Legacy
Landis is noted for his contributions to legislation affecting land policy and judicial matters during the Progressive Era. His career reflects the political dynamics of Indiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
