Charaxes ansorgei

Definition
Charaxes ansorgei is a species of butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, subfamily Charaxinae. It is native to parts of East and Central Africa.

Overview
Members of the genus Charaxes are commonly known as “rajahs” or “emperors” and are distinguished by their robust bodies and rapid, powerful flight. C. ansorgei inhabits forested and woodland habitats, where adults are typically observed feeding on fermenting fruit, tree sap, and occasionally animal dung. The species is part of the Afrotropical butterfly fauna and is recorded from countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda. Seasonal variations in abundance have been noted, with peaks coinciding with the rainy season when host plants are most plentiful.

Etymology/Origin
The specific epithet ansorgei honors the German collector and explorer Dr. William (or Oskar) Ansorge, who gathered numerous insect specimens in Africa during the late 19th century. The name follows the convention of Latinizing a person’s surname to create a species epithet.

Characteristics

  • Adult morphology: The butterfly exhibits a wingspan of approximately 70–85 mm. The dorsal (upper) wing surface is predominantly dark brown to black with a series of pale or white spots forming a subtle pattern on the forewings. The hindwings carry a modest sub‑marginal band and a series of small, pale markings near the tornus. The ventral (underside) is lighter, displaying mottled browns and grays that provide camouflage against tree bark.
  • Sexual dimorphism: Males tend to be slightly smaller and have brighter, more iridescent markings on the dorsal forewings than females, which are generally larger with broader wings.
  • Life cycle: Eggs are laid singly on host plants. Larval host plants for C. ansorgei have not been comprehensively documented; however, related Charaxes species frequently feed on members of the families Fabaceae (e.g., Acacia spp.) and Euphorbiaceae. Accurate information on specific larval host plants for C. ansorgei is not confirmed.
  • Behavior: Adults are strong fliers, often defending territories and perching on sunlit leaves. They are attracted to fermenting fruit placed on ground traps, a common method for studying their populations.
