Chanovsky District

Definition Chanovsky District (Russian: Чановский район) is an administrative and municipal district (raion) of Novosibirsk Oblast, Russia.

Overview Located in the western part of Novosibirsk Oblast, in the Baraba Lowland, Chanovsky District is one of the region's administrative subdivisions. Its administrative center is the urban-type settlement (work settlement) of Chany. The district is situated approximately 350 kilometers west of Novosibirsk, the oblast's capital. As of the 2021 Census, its population was 23,286. The district covers an area of approximately 5,515 square kilometers.

Etymology/Origin The district takes its name from its administrative center, Chany. The settlement of Chany itself is believed to derive its name from the nearby Lake Chany, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Western Siberia. The word "Chany" is thought to have Turkic origins, possibly meaning "big" or "bowl," referring to the large lake. Chanovsky District was officially established in 1925 as part of the Siberian Krai, during the administrative reforms of the Soviet Union. It subsequently became part of the West Siberian Krai and, in 1937, was included in Novosibirsk Oblast upon its formation.

Characteristics The geography of Chanovsky District is characterized by its location within the Baraba Lowland, an extensive plain marked by numerous lakes, swamps, and steppes. While Lake Chany is partially within the district's boundaries, only its northwestern portion is located there. The climate is continental, with cold, snowy winters and warm summers. The economy of Chanovsky District is primarily agricultural, focusing on grain cultivation (wheat, barley, oats) and livestock farming (cattle, pigs, poultry). There are also enterprises involved in the processing of agricultural products. The district benefits from its location along the Trans-Siberian Railway, which passes through Chany, making it a transportation hub and facilitating economic activity.
