Changle (Chinese: 长乐; pinyin: Chánglè) is a district of the prefecture‑level city of Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province, People's Republic of China. Formerly a county‑level city, Changle was reorganized as a district of Fuzhou in 2017.
Geography
Changle District occupies the southeastern part of the Fuzhou metropolitan area, bordering the East China Sea to the east. Its coastal location includes several bays and islands, notably the Cape of the Great Sea (Dà Hǎi Dǎng) and the wetland area of the Changle Bay National Nature Reserve. The district covers an area of approximately 1,100 square kilometres (425 sq mi).
Administrative divisions
The district is subdivided into subdistricts, towns, and townships. As of the latest administrative adjustment, it comprises several subdistricts (e.g., Changle Subdistrict, Xinghua Subdistrict) and towns such as Jinzhu, Shanmei, and Shanyang.
Population
According to the 2020 national census, Changle District had a resident population of roughly 1.2 million people. The district has experienced significant out‑migration, with many residents establishing overseas communities, particularly in Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.
History
The name "Changle" (literally “long happiness”) dates to the Tang dynasty, when the area was established as a county. Throughout imperial history, it served as a maritime gateway for Fujian, facilitating trade and cultural exchange with the broader world. During the Ming and Qing periods, Changle was noted for shipbuilding and the export of tea, salt, and ceramics. In the 20th century, it was upgraded to a county‑level city in 1995 before becoming a district of Fuzhou in 2017.
Economy
Changle’s economy is diversified, with traditional sectors such as agriculture (rice, sweet potatoes, and aquaculture) coexisting with manufacturing and services. Notable industries include footwear and apparel production, machinery manufacturing, and food processing. The district benefits from its proximity to Fuzhou’s port facilities and the Fuzhou Changle International Airport, which opened in 1997 and serves both passenger and cargo traffic.
Transportation
- Air: Fuzhou Changle International Airport (IATA: FUC) is located within the district and connects the region to major Chinese cities and several international destinations.
- Rail: The Wenzhou–Fuzhou railway and the Fuzhou–Xiamen high‑speed railway pass through the district, providing high‑speed rail service to the provincial capital and neighboring provinces.
- Road: National Highway 104 and the G15 Shenyang–Haikou Expressway traverse Changle, linking it to the coastal highway network.
- Maritime: The district’s coastal ports facilitate regional shipping, particularly for bulk commodities and containerized goods.
Culture and society
Changle has a distinctive Minnan (Southern Fujian) cultural heritage, reflected in its dialect, cuisine, and traditional festivals such as the Lantern Festival and the Mid‑Autumn Festival. The district is also known for its overseas Chinese diaspora; many Changle natives have historically emigrated to countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, and the United Kingdom, maintaining strong transnational familial and economic ties.
Education and research
The district hosts several secondary schools and vocational colleges, with higher education institutions located primarily in the urban core of Fuzhou. Collaborative programs with universities in Fuzhou focus on marine sciences, engineering, and trade logistics.
Environmental considerations
Coastal erosion, sea‑level rise, and industrial pollution have prompted local government initiatives aimed at sustainable development, including wetland restoration projects and stricter emissions standards for manufacturing facilities.
