Definition
Chaleo Yoovidhya (Thai: ชาเลโอ ยศวิทยา; 1932 – 17 March 2012) was a Thai entrepreneur and co‑founder of the energy‑drink company that produced the beverage known internationally as Red Bull.
Overview
Born in the Phichit Province of Thailand, Chaleo began his career in the pharmaceutical and food‑distribution sectors before entering the beverage industry. In the 1970s he created a tonic drink called Krating Daeng (Thai for “Red Bull”), which was marketed as a stimulant for laborers and truck drivers. In 1984, Chaleo partnered with Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz, who adapted the formula and branding for Western markets. The joint venture, Red Bull GmbH, launched the product internationally in 1987 and grew into a multinational corporation with a dominant position in the global energy‑drink market. At the time of his death, Chaleo held a substantial equity stake in the Red Bull companies, making him one of Thailand’s wealthiest individuals.
Etymology/Origin
The surname “Yoovidhya” (Thai: ยศวิทยา) is of Thai origin and is derived from the Sanskrit elements “yōga” (meaning “union” or “joining”) and “vidyā” (meaning “knowledge” or “science”). The given name “Chaleo” is a Thai transliteration of the Pali/Thai name “Chalo,” which does not have a widely documented meaning but is used as a personal name in Thailand.
