Definition
Chaka (茶卡) is a town located within Ulan County (乌兰县), which is part of the Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, People’s Republic of China. The town is most notably associated with the nearby Chaka Salt Lake, a major tourist attraction.
Overview
Chaka lies on the northeastern edge of the Qaidam Basin on the Tibetan Plateau, at an altitude of roughly 3,100 meters (10,170 ft). Administratively, it is one of several township-level divisions governed by Ulan County. The local economy is traditionally based on pastoralism and salt mining, but tourism has become increasingly important since the early 21st century due to the scenic value of the adjacent salt lake. Infrastructure in the town includes a small railway station on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway, which provides access for domestic and international visitors.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Chaka” is transliterated from the Mandarin pronunciation of the Chinese characters 茶卡. The characters themselves do not convey a literal meaning related to the locality; instead, the term is believed to derive from a local Tibetan toponym, though precise linguistic origins are not definitively documented.
Characteristics
- Geography: Chaka is situated near the edge of the Chaka Salt Lake (茶卡盐湖), a shallow, land‑locked saline lake covering about 105 km². The lake’s white salt flats are exposed during the dry season, creating a reflective surface that attracts photographers.
- Climate: The town experiences a cold semi‑arid climate (Köppen BSk), with long, harsh winters, short cool summers, and annual precipitation below 300 mm. Temperature averages range from –10 °C in January to 16 °C in July.
- Population: Census data from 2020 recorded a population of approximately 7,500 residents in the town and its surrounding villages, predominantly of Tibetan ethnicity, with Han Chinese and other minorities present.
- Economy: Traditional herding of yaks, sheep, and goats remains a livelihood for many households. Salt extraction from the lake has been practiced for centuries and continues on a smaller scale. Since 2015, tourism—centered on the salt lake’s “mirror” effect and surrounding highland scenery—has generated significant revenue and prompted development of hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops.
- Transport: Chaka is served by the Chaka railway station on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway, and a provincial highway connects it to the county seat, Ulan Town, and to larger regional centers such as Xining, the provincial capital.
