- Family: Loricariidae
- Genus: Chaetostoma
- Species: Chaetostoma milesi

Common Names
- Often referred to as the “Brown Pleco” or “Suckermouth Catfish” in the aquarium trade.
Description
Chaetostoma milesi is a small to medium-sized armored catfish, typically reaching a standard length of 10–13 cm (4–5 in). Like other members of the genus, it possesses a ventrally positioned, suction‑cup‑like mouth adapted for adhering to substrates in fast‑flowing water. The body is covered with bony plates, and the coloration ranges from brown to mottled tan, providing camouflage among rocks and sediments. The dorsal fin is relatively low, and the pectoral fins are robust, aiding in station-holding.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is native to western South America, primarily documented from river drainages in Colombia, including the Magdalena River basin and adjacent tributaries. It inhabits clear, well‑oxygenated streams and rivers with moderate to strong currents, preferring rocky substrates, submerged wood, and crevices where algae and periphyton grow.
Ecology and Behavior
- Diet: Primarily grazes on periphyton, algae, and biofilm that grow on submerged surfaces; occasional ingestion of detritus and small invertebrates has been reported.
- Reproduction: Detailed reproductive biology is not thoroughly documented; however, related Chaetostoma species are known to be cave or crevice spawners, with males guarding eggs.
- Behavior: Exhibits strong adhesion to substrate via its specialized mouth, enabling it to resist currents. Typically nocturnal or crepuscular in activity patterns.
Aquarium Trade
Chaetostoma milesi is popular among hobbyists for its algae‑grazing capabilities and hardy nature. In captivity, it requires a well‑filtered, fast‑flowing tank setup with ample rocky surfaces for attachment. Water parameters commonly maintained are: temperature 22–26 °C (72–79 °F), pH 6.5–7.5, and moderate hardness. It is generally peaceful but may become territorial with conspecifics in limited space.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Chaetostoma milesi; consequently, its global conservation status is listed as “Not Evaluated.” There is currently no evidence of major population declines, but habitat alteration (e.g., dam construction, pollution) could impact local populations.
