The species was originally described by Francis Walker in 1864 under the name Stenoma anonella. It has subsequently been placed in the genus Cerconota, which comprises a group of moths predominantly distributed in the Neotropical region.
Description
Adult specimens of C. anonella exhibit the typical morphology of Depressariidae moths, with a modest wingspan ranging approximately from 20 to 30 mm. The forewings are generally ochreous to brownish with subtle darker markings that may include diffuse transverse lines and spots, providing camouflage against bark and foliage. The hindwings are lighter in coloration, often pale gray or whitish. Detailed morphological characteristics such as genitalia structure are used by lepidopterists to confirm species identification, but specific diagnostic features for C. anonella are not extensively documented in publicly available literature.
Distribution
Cerconota anonella is known from parts of the Neotropical realm. Recorded occurrences include countries in Central and South America, notably Brazil, French Guiana, and the Amazon basin region. The precise range may be broader, but confirmed records are limited to these locales.
