Overview
Located at 34°59′40″ N 50°18′55″ E, the district lies in the central part of Markazi province. According to the 2016 national census, it had a population of 259,354 residing in 78,635 households. The district encompasses the city of Saveh, the city of Aveh (elevated from village status after the 2011 census), and several rural districts (dehestāns).

Etymology / Origin
The name “Central District” is a direct translation of the Persian term bakhsh-e markazi, a standard designation for the primary district of a county in Iran. “Markazi” means “central” in Persian, indicating its status as the main administrative division surrounding the county capital.

Characteristics

  • Administrative Structure: The district is divided into two cities (Saveh and Aveh) and four rural districts: Nur Ali Beyk, Qareh Chay, Shahsavan Kandi, and Taraznamid. Each rural district comprises numerous villages and settlements.
  • Population Trends: The district’s population grew from 215,413 in 2006 to 238,041 in 2011, reaching 259,354 by 2016, reflecting steady demographic expansion driven by urbanization around Saveh.
  • Economy & Land Use: While detailed economic data are limited, the district’s economy is typical of central Markazi, combining agriculture in the rural districts with commercial and industrial activities centered in Saveh.
  • Geography: The area is situated on the Iranian plateau, featuring a semi‑arid climate. Its coordinates place it east of the provincial capital Arak and southwest of the central Iranian highlands.
  • Infrastructure: Saveh, as the district’s capital, hosts provincial roads, educational institutions, health facilities, and serves as a regional market hub. The elevation of Aveh to city status after 2011 indicates infrastructural development in peripheral settlements.
