Celtworld was a heritage-themed attraction and theme park located in Peatlands Park, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It opened in 1996 with the aim of immersing visitors in the ancient world of Celtic mythology, history, and folklore. The park featured various exhibits, animatronics, and interactive displays designed to bring to life tales of Celtic heroes, gods, and legends.
Despite significant investment and ambitious plans, Celtworld suffered from lower-than-expected visitor numbers and substantial financial difficulties. It ceased operations and closed its doors approximately 12 months after its opening in 1997. Its rapid failure became a notable case study in the challenges associated with developing large-scale tourism ventures, particularly in areas without a pre-existing strong tourist infrastructure or sustained visitor interest. The site was subsequently redeveloped or returned to its natural state.
