The accepted common name in North American field guides is the ornate pennant.
Description
Celithemis ornata is a medium‑sized dragonfly. Adults typically measure 38–45 mm in total length with a wingspan of roughly 55–65 mm. The thorax is dark with contrasting amber or orange markings, and the wings display distinctive amber‑brown patches near the base and along the veins, giving the species its “ornate” appearance. Males exhibit brighter coloration than females, which are generally more subdued.
Distribution and habitat
- Geographic range: The species is primarily recorded in the eastern and central United States, extending from Texas and Oklahoma eastward through the Gulf Coast to Florida and northward to Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Occasional records exist from southern Ontario, Canada.
- Habitat: C. ornata inhabits still or slow‑moving freshwater bodies such as ponds, marshes, and the margins of lakes. It preferentially occupies open, sunny areas with abundant emergent vegetation where it can perch and hunt.

Biology and ecology
- Life cycle: Like other libellulids, the species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid in aquatic vegetation; larvae (nymphs) are aquatic predators that develop over one to two years, depending on climate.
- Behavior: Adults are often observed perching on low vegetation or directly on the water surface. Flight is generally low and maneuverable. Males defend small territories around preferred oviposition sites.
- Diet: Both larvae and adults are carnivorous, feeding on smaller aquatic invertebrates and flying insects, respectively.
Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies Celithemis ornata as Least Concern (LC) because it has a broad range and no major, widespread threats have been documented. Nonetheless, localized habitat loss due to wetland drainage and water pollution can impact regional populations.
