Definition
The Cavnic mine is a former underground gold‑ and silver‑producing mine located near the town of Cavnic in Maramureș County, north‑western Romania.
Overview
The mine was originally developed in the early 20th century, with commercial production commencing in 1935 under the name “Cavnic Gold Mine.” Throughout its operational life, the deposit yielded several tonnes of gold and significant quantities of silver, making it one of the most important historic gold sites in Romania. After a period of decline and temporary closures during the communist era, the mine was re‑opened in the early 2000s under the ownership of Canadian‑listed companies, most notably Carpathian Gold Inc. Production ceased in 2017 following the exhaustion of economically recoverable ore and the transition of the site to a closure and reclamation phase.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Cavnic” derives from the nearby settlement of Cavnic, which in turn is believed to stem from a Slavic root kav meaning “rock” or “stone,” reflecting the mountainous terrain of the region. The term “mine” simply denotes the underground extraction facility established at the site.
Characteristics
- Geology: The ore body is hosted in metamorphic rocks of the Carpathian orogen, primarily consisting of quartz‑vein structures with disseminated gold and silver mineralization.
- Mining method: Historically, the operation employed conventional underground mining techniques, including drilling, blasting, and selective ore extraction via shafts and drifts.
- Production data: Cumulative production over the mine’s lifespan is estimated at approximately 2.5 million troy ounces of gold and 30 million troy ounces of silver, according to company reports and Romanian mining statistics.
- Environmental management: Following cessation of extraction, the site entered a decommissioning program that includes waste rock stabilization, tailings dam monitoring, and re‑vegetation of disturbed areas in accordance with Romanian environmental legislation and EU standards.
