Cathal Malone (born 1992) is an Irish hurler who plays for Clare Senior Championship club Sixmilebridge and at inter-county level with the Clare senior hurling team. He usually lines out at midfield.
Personal Information
Malone was born in Lahinch, County Clare, Ireland. He is a secondary school teacher by occupation and stands 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) tall. His Irish-language native name is Cathal Ó Maoileoin.
Club Career
Malone first played hurling at a high standard as a student at St. Flannan's College in Ennis, competing in the Harty Cup. He later played with the University of Limerick in the Fitzgibbon Cup. At club level, he initially enjoyed success as a Gaelic footballer with the Ennistymon club, winning a Clare Under-21 A Football Championship medal in 2010. Due to the absence of a senior hurling team in Ennistymon, he joined the Sixmilebridge club, with whom he has won four Clare Senior Hurling Championship medals.
Inter-County Career
Malone first appeared on the inter-county scene with Clare at minor level, playing as right wing-forward on the team beaten by Kilkenny in the 2010 All-Ireland minor final. He progressed to the under-21 team and won back-to-back All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship medals as a substitute in 2012 and on the field of play in 2013.
He was drafted onto the Clare senior team shortly after leaving the under-21 grade. Malone was a member of the Clare team that won the National Hurling League title in 2016. He was nominated for All-Star awards in 2020 and 2021.
On 21 July 2024, Malone started at midfield as Clare won the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship for the first time in 11 years, defeating Cork after extra time by a score of 3-29 to 1-34, securing Clare's fifth All-Ireland title.
