Location and Geography

Monastery of Castro de Avelãs (Mosteiro de Castro de Avelãs)

The parish is best known for the ruins of the Benedictine Monastery of São Salvador de Castro de Avelãs, a Cluniac monastery founded in the 12th century. The monastery played a significant role in the settlement of the region and in assisting pilgrims travelling the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) from the 12th century through the end of the 16th century.

The most distinctive surviving feature is the Romanesque apse, constructed in red brick with blind arches — an unusual architectural style in Portugal. The complex also includes three round chapels in the transept, an 18th-century rectangular extension, and a sacristy. The monastery was dissolved in 1543–1546 by a Papal Bull of Pope Paul III, which also created the Diocese of Miranda do Douro, and its properties were annexed to that diocese. After dissolution, the complex gradually fell into ruin.

Demographics

The population of the parish has declined over recent decades. The 2021 census recorded 430 inhabitants, down from 460 in 2011.
