Etymology/Origin
The name “Castlewellan” derives from the Irish Caisleán Uí Ualláin, meaning “castle of the O’Wallan (Uallán) family.” The English form reflects the presence of Castlewellan Castle, a 19th‑century country house built for the Annesley (later the Castlewellan) family, which gave the settlement its modern name.
